Experience the famous “Southern Loop” of the South Island, with spectacular highlights along the way. See Christchurch, the Canterbury Plains, iconic Church of the Good Shepherd, stunning Lake Tekapo, and Mount Cook National Park. Discover Scottish influenced Dunedin where you will be treated to a traditional Scottish Haggis Ceremony! Visit Larnach Castle, New Zealand’s only castle before travelling over land to reach Lake Te Anau. Here you will join a launch cruise on the magnificent Milford Sound that takes you out to the open sea. Head next to the alpine adventure capital of Queenstown. Enjoy an evening cruise across the lake aboard a vintage steamship and dinner in the Colonel’s Homestead at Walter Peak High Country Farm. Take a day to explore Queenstown at your leisure. From Queenstown you will travel via serene Lake Wanaka into Mt Aspiring and Westland National Parks and along the coast to the glacier region and Franz Josef Glacier. Travel back to Christchurch via Otira Gorge, Arthurs Pass and the Canterbury Plains. From 28 September 2016 onward's the TranzAlpine train journey from Greymouth to Christchurch will be included in the tour.

Day 1 Arrive Christchurch
Welcome to New Zealand. Be greeted on arrival at the airport by a Kirra Representative and be transferred to your first nights accommodation.

Day 2 Christchurch/Mt Cook/Omarama
Cross the broad Canterbury Plains with the Southern Alps to the west. Enter the foothills near Geraldine to the barren Mackenzie Country. View the Church of the Good Shepherd and the Collie Dog Memorial overlooking Lake Tekapo. Visit Mt Cook National Park, with time to enjoy the scenic majesty of New Zealand’s highest snow capped peaks and a visit to the Sir Edmund Hillary Alpine Centre before travelling around Lake Pukaki to Twizel and Omarama.

Day 3 Omarama/Dunedin
Pass large hydro lakes as you travel down the Waitaki Valley to Oamaru and Dunedin – the ‘Scottish’ city. An early arrival allows the choice of excellent optional activities; your Coach Captain will be able to assist with these. This evening prior to dinner you will be treated to a traditional Scottish Haggis Ceremony complete with piper, address to the Haggis and gift.

Day 4 Dunedin/Te Anau
Today visit historic Larnach Castle, New Zealand’s only castle. Learn about its tragic and mysterious history as well as enjoying the truly spectacular views across the Otago Peninsula and coast. Later leave Dunedin behind and head inland, crossing rich farmlands to the agricultural towns of Gore and Lumsden before arriving at the shores of Lake Te Anau.

Day 5 Milford Sound Day Trip
Follow the Hollyford Valley where the Beech forests reach to the roads edge and snow capped peaks tower above. Descend into the Cleddau Canyon to Milford Sound, the world renowned natural wonder, dominated by Mitre Peak. Luxuriant rainforest clings to sheer rock walls and waterfalls tumble hundreds of meters to the sea below. A launch cruise takes you to the open sea and shows such highlights as the Bowen and Stirling Falls. If time and weather permits, walk into the rainforest to visit The Chasm, a spectacular waterfall, and then pause at the Homer Tunnel. After your tour you will return to Te Anau.

Milford Sounds Cruise

Day 6 Te Anau/Queenstown
This morning, drive north to Kingston and around the shores of Lake Wakatipu to picturesque Queenstown. This evening, cruise across the lake aboard the vintage steamship TSS Earnslaw, known as the ‘Lady of the Lake’. Launched in 1912, the TSS Earnslaw is named after the highest peak in the region, Mount Earnslaw. On the journey across the lake take in some of Lake Wakatipu’s most beautiful alpine scenery, before reaching the Colonel’s Homestead at Walter Peak High Country Farm for dinner.

Day 7 Queenstown
Today is at your leisure whilst in the adventure capital. You can either sit back or relax or your Coach Captain can assist with any optional activities you would like to do. We recommend you take a ride on the world famous Shotover Jet Boat, take a gondola ride to the Skyline above for spectacular views, take a tour to the gold mining area of Skippers Canyon or for the adventurous - white water rafting. Alternatively, browse in the many shops and galleries.

Day 8 Queenstown/Haast Pass/Franz Josef
Pass picturesque Lake Hayes on to an area steeped in fascinating history relating to early settlement and the gold mining era, to Lake Wanaka, a picture postcard resort on the lakes edge with a spectacular mountain backdrop. Pass Lake Hawea and the upper reaches of Lake Wanaka to Makarora into Mt Aspiring and Westland National Parks. Drive north along the coast to the glacier region.

Day 9 Franz Josef/Christchurch
Today we head north along the coast and pay a visit to a Pounamu (also known as Greenstone or Jade) factory. Pounamu is considered a treasure in Maori culture and is seen as a sign of status and power. It is a hard, highly valued stone found only on the south island. It was often given as gifts to seal important agreements. See how beautiful jewellery is created out of this amazing green stone. Cross the Otira Gorge and Arthurs Pass to the Canterbury Plains and into Christchurch.
