Your walk includes:

  • 5 days / 4 nights
  • 3 Day Walk with 2 nights in Department of Conservation Huts
  • Accommodation before the walk at Bella Vista in Invercargill(twin share)
  • Accommodation after South Seas Hotel on Stewart Island (twin share)
  • Transfers ex ex Invercargill to and from the walk (return flights Invercargill to Stewart Island)

Department of Conservation Huts

  • These huts you stay in have all the essentials you need for shelter and cooking with sinks, gas cookers, cold water, tables, seating benches and wood burners for heating and as well as solar lighting
  • Pillows & linen are not provided in the communal bunkrooms
  • Ablution blocks have flush or vaulted toilets and washbasins with cold water only. Waterfalls or swimming holes will fulfil any desires for showers or baths along the track
  • Department of Conservation rangers are present on the track but not at each hut

What should you bring?

  • Waterproof large pack
  • Toiletries including: soap, toothpaste, toilet paper, small towel
  • Sleeping bag and liner
  • First Aid Kit including: blister kit, insect repellent, sunscreen, pain relief and bandages, personal medication
  • Survival Kit including: survival blanket, whistle, paper, pencil, high energy snack
  • Matches
  • Torch and spare batteries
  • Large drink bottle
  • Camera, lightweight shoes for hut, earplugs
  • 2 – 3 sets of fast drying clothing. It isn't possible to dry clothing at the huts.
  • Walking / tramping boots
  • Warm wind and rain proof jacket
  • Warm hat and gloves
  • Sunhat, sunscreen and sunglasses

Pre nights Accommodation is at Bella Vista Invercargill and Post Accommodation after at South Seas Hotel, Stewart Island, it is important to note that accommodation is Multi Share in the Huts and you cannot have your own room.

Day 1Halfmoon Bay (Oban) to Port William Hut

Your journey starts from Oban’s Department of Conservation visitor centre as you head toward Lee Bay. Pass through a chain link structure representing the forming of Rakiura National Park and make your way to Little River toward Maori Beach. Follow the beach along the coastline before a climb up a ridge through forest then down to the water’s edge again to your first evening’s stop at Port William Hut at the end of Magnetic Beach.

Day 2Port William Hut to North Arm Hut

Heading inland you pass through a former logging area which is now covered in regrowth of podocarp forest mixed with original native vegetation. A number of bridged creeks follow as you head toward your day’s destination of North Arm Hut at Paterson Inlet.

Day 3North Arm Hut to Halfmoon Bay (Oban)

A sawmill track brings you past bays, through forest and and amongst wildlife and birds on the shore of Paterson Inlet. The walk along halfmoon bay is populated by rimu and kamahi trees as you return to Oban.
